Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia
Surgery in this case occurs in a controlled procedure that requires initial stabilisation by the neonatal team (paediatric anesthetist; surgeon; and neonatologist). It is not considered an emergency operation. Symptoms can range from asymptomatic to profound respiratory failure requiring a breathing machine.
An early diagnosis and referral grants time to assess and consider placement of a balloon in utero. This can facilitate with lung growth and stabilise the post delivery period to a better degree. Small or uncomplicated lesions can be managed conservatively in utero or post delivery.
