This can occur in any location but it is known for its occurrence in the central nervous system. Many AVMs are asymptomatic, but they can also cause profound cardiac failure, respiratory failure and multiple organ dysfunction.
The AVM must first be identified with advanced imaging. Interventional radiology, which is a minimal invasive image-guided diagnosis and treatment, or surgical excision, can be used depending on the given case. Imaging is critical during the workup period while the infant is still stabilised. AVM is rarely diagnosed antenatally unless there is and extensive large lesion with organ dysfunction.
